Abstract

2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (Ethephon) was applied alone and in combination with NAA or fenoprop on the three apple cultivars. Apple trees with ethephon applications at 400§·/§¤, plus NAA at 10§·/§¤ for abscission control, approx. 1 month before optimum maturity exhibited increased fruit coloration.
On some cultivars, fruit firmness, soluble solids, acidity, and soluble solid-acid ratio were altered. Ethephon accelerated red color development and hastened maturity of ¢¥Jonathan¢¥ and ¢¥Delicious¢¥ apples by approx. 10 days. In ¢¥Ralls¢¥ there was little difference in results. Ethephon reduced the titratable acidity of ¢¥Jonathan¢¥ fruit resulting in a greater soluble solid-acid ratio. Ethephon treatments applied without an accompanying abscission control chemical resulted in fruit abscission within 7 days by 80% in ¢¥Jonathan¢¥, 29% in ¢¥Ralls¢¥, respectively.
Ethephon sprays do not appear to affect the storage quality of ¢¥Jonathan¢¥ and ¢¥Ralls¢¥. However, ethephon sprays slightly affect the fruit firmness of ¢¥Delicious¢¥ during storage.
